Ocurrence enzootic hematuria in buffaloes in Brazil: epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects

ABSTRACT: It is reported the occurrence of enzootic hematuria (EH) in buffaloes Brazil after performing an epidemiological survey and clinicopathological analises. To date, EH caused by ingestion Pteridium esculentum subsp. arachnoideum, a radiomimetic plant popularly known as “bracken fern”, has not been described this species Brazil. Bovine responsible for high economic losses Brazil’s Southeast Region only because deaths it causes, but also owing to its negative effect on productivity. In São José do Barreiro County, Paulo, some farmers areas with incidence bovine have replacing cattle buffaloes, based premise that latter would be more resistant poisoning spp. However, even though initial observations indicated are indeed less sensitive than toxic principle spp., cases reported. Macroscopic examination revealed thickened urinary vesicle mucosa, along multiple foci ulcerated, exophytic, verrucous, pedunculated lesions. one studied, bladder wall was ruptured exhibited marked secondary inflammation. Histologically, neoplastic non-neoplastic changes similar those poisoned were observed. The neoplasms found included papilloma, carcinoma situ, urothelial (low grade), inverted, microcystic, trabecular variants, divergent differentiation (squamous glandular), squamous cell carcinoma, lymphangioma, hemangioma, hemangiosarcoma. There coexistence epithelial mesenchymal neoplasms. papillomavirus particles detected polymerase chain reaction samples analyzed.
